Space Hotel Aims to Redefine Backpacker Accommodation in Melbourne

A new hotel that hopes to market itself to backpackers as well as business people and families has opened in Melbourne.

The Space Hotel is located in Melbourne’s CBD on the site of the former Vic Hall. The hotel has completely refurbished and redeveloped the old site and now hosts 128 brand new rooms, with beds starting at $28 per night.

It is the first of its kind in Australia and, according to a press release, the hotel hopes to “redefine budget accommodation” and “cast a sense of luxury on the previously dreary and dirty backpacker scene.”

Their website claims, “unlike many Melbourne hostels, we believe living on a budget shouldn’t mean budget living.”

All of the hotel’s dorm rooms feature lockable storage space, high quality mattresses and private reading lamps, while each of the private rooms have flat screen TVs and iPod docks. All guests have access to a restaurant/bar, wireless internet, a fully kitted-out communal kitchen, gym, barbeque grills and laundromat.
