A Californian backpacker hostel company is planning to open a 24,000 sq ft hostel in Dublin’s Temple Bar.

The Stafford Group paid more than €33m in 2006 for the building and has since leased the ground floor to Tesco. USA Hostels is seeking permission to convert the remaining vacant offices to accommodation.

USA Hostels was set up in January 1994 by David Reuter as the Grand Pacific Hostel in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter. It won the best chain in the world award at the 2013 “Hoscar” awards presented by Hostelworld, the Irish-based company.

Cut-pice hospitality operators have been scoping Dublin opportunities, among them Tony Fernandes, the Malaysian owner of Queens Park Rangers football club in London.
